How to Make Your Manicure Last

How to Make Your Manicure Last

Getting your nails done is the easy part. What happens after you leave the salon is what actually decides how long they last.

This guide covers everything you need to know, by service type, with honest advice on what works and what doesn't. We wrote it because we'd rather you know this upfront than come back disappointed two days later.

Why your nail type matters

Every person's nails are different. Some hold product for weeks without any effort. Others lift after a few days no matter what. This isn't always about what you do wrong. Sometimes it's just how your nails are built.

Very thin nails flex more than thicker ones. When the nail bends, the product on top doesn't bend with it at the same rate, and that's when lifting starts. Very curved nails, what nail techs call a C-curve, create more tension at the edges and can lift there first. Very oily nail plates don't grip product as well from the start, which means the bond is weaker before you even leave the salon.

If any of this sounds like your nails, we'll tell you before we start. We'd rather recommend the right service for your nail type than have you leave with something that won't last.

The rules that apply to every service

These apply no matter what service you had. No exceptions.

Why cuticle oil is the most important thing you can do

This is the single most important thing you can do after any manicure. Cuticle oil keeps the skin around your nail hydrated, which stops it from drying out and pulling away from the product. Dry cuticles are one of the main reasons manicures lift early.

Apply it once in the morning and once before bed. Keep a small pen in your bag for during the day. It takes ten seconds and makes a real difference.

Why you should avoid hot water after a manicure

Your nails absorb water. When they do, they expand slightly. When they dry out, they contract. The product on top doesn't move with them at the same rate, and over time that loosens the bond.

Hot water makes this worse. Long hot showers, baths, washing up without gloves. Cold or lukewarm water is much kinder to your nails.

Why you should wear gloves when cleaning

Cleaning products, washing up liquid, bleach. These chemicals break down the product over time. Every time your nails are exposed to them without protection, you're shortening your manicure.

Keep a pair of rubber gloves near the sink. It sounds like a small thing but it adds days to your manicure.

Why you should never use your nails as tools

Opening a can, peeling off a sticker, scratching something. Every time you do this you're putting sideways pressure on the product that it wasn't designed to handle. This is one of the fastest ways to cause a tip to break or an edge to lift.

Use the pad of your finger instead. Your nails will thank you.

What happens when you pick at your nails

When an edge starts to lift, the temptation to pick at it is real. Don't.

Picking doesn't just remove the product. It takes layers of your natural nail with it. Over time this weakens the nail plate and makes it harder for future products to bond properly. If something is lifting, come back in and we'll fix it properly.

Why acetone damages your manicure

Acetone-based nail polish removers dissolve gel products. If you're using any nail products at home, check the label. Non-acetone removers are fine for most things. Acetone is not.

Regular Polish

Regular polish dries through evaporation, not a lamp. The solvents in the polish evaporate into the air and the colour hardens gradually. No UV, no LED. Just time and air.

That's also why it's the most delicate service we offer, and the only one without a guarantee. Not because we don't care, but because that's just the honest reality of how the product works.

How long does regular polish last?

With good care, between 3 and 7 days. If your hands are in water a lot or you work with them, expect closer to 3. If you're careful and keep them dry, you can stretch it to a week.

How long does it take to fully dry?

This is where most people go wrong. Regular polish takes 20 to 30 minutes to feel dry to the touch, but up to 2 hours to fully harden underneath. The surface sets first. The layers underneath take much longer.

For the first 2 hours after your appointment: no bags, no pockets, no washing up, no typing with pressure. The polish feels dry but it isn't. A dent at this stage can ruin the whole manicure.

What makes it chip faster?

Water is the main one. Hot water slows down the hardening process and keeps solvents in a liquid state longer, which softens the surface instead of hardening it. Cold or lukewarm water is much kinder.

Chemicals make it worse. Washing up liquid, cleaning products, and hand sanitiser all break down the polish from the edges inward. Gloves help, but with regular polish even gloves can cause condensation that lifts the colour.

Picking at a chip makes it bigger. Every time.

When should I come back?

When you're ready. Regular polish is meant to be changed often. When it chips, it's time for a new set.

Shellac

Shellac is a hybrid between traditional polish and gel. It's applied in thin layers and cured under a UV or LED lamp after each coat. The lamp hardens the product in seconds, which is why you leave the salon with completely dry nails — no waiting, no smudging.

The result is a harder, more durable surface than regular polish, with a glossy finish that holds its shine for weeks.

How long does Shellac last?

With proper care, Shellac lasts between 10 and 14 days chip-free. With excellent aftercare, some clients stretch it to 21 days. Lifestyle is the biggest variable. If your hands are in water a lot or you work with chemicals regularly, expect the lower end.

What should I avoid in the first 12 hours?

Even though Shellac feels completely dry when you leave, the product continues to settle and bond to the nail plate for the first few hours. Avoid prolonged hot water exposure in the first 12 hours. Long baths, hot showers, and washing up without gloves in this window can loosen the bond before it fully sets.

Cold or lukewarm water is fine. Just avoid heat and prolonged soaking.

What makes Shellac lift or chip faster?

Hot water over time. Your nails absorb water and expand. When they dry out they contract back to their normal size. The Shellac on top doesn't move with them at the same rate, and over time that loosens the bond and causes lifting.

Chemicals without gloves. Washing up liquid, cleaning products, and bleach all break down the product from the edges. Gloves every time you clean, no exceptions.

In winter and autumn in northern Europe, nails tend to be drier and UV exposure is lower, which can cause Shellac to peel earlier than in summer. If you notice your Shellac lifting faster in winter, this is why. Cuticle oil becomes even more important in colder months.

Picking at a lifting edge. If a corner starts to lift, water gets underneath and the whole nail follows. Don't pick. Come in and we'll fix it.

What makes Shellac last longer?

Cuticle oil every day. Cuticle oil keeps the product flexible and nourishes the natural nail underneath, which is one of the most effective things you can do to extend the life of your Shellac.

A thin layer of clear top coat every 4 or 5 days refreshes the seal and adds a few extra days to the finish.

Gloves for cleaning and washing up. Every time.

When should I come back?

When you see visible regrowth, lifting at the edges, or the shine has dulled and won't come back. That's usually somewhere between 2 and 3 weeks.

If an edge lifts before that, don't wait. Come in during the guarantee window and we'll fix it at no cost.

Builder Gel / BIAB

Builder Gel and BIAB (Builder in a Bottle) are the same type of product in different formats. Both are thicker than Shellac, cure under a UV or LED lamp, and are designed to add structure and strength to the natural nail. Unlike Shellac, which sits on top of the nail as a colour, Builder Gel creates a reinforcing layer that protects the nail plate underneath.

This makes it the best option for clients with weak, thin, or brittle nails. Over time, with regular appointments, it helps the natural nail grow stronger.

How long does Builder Gel last?

On average, Builder Gel lasts between 3 and 4 weeks with proper care. Some clients with good nail health and careful aftercare stretch it slightly beyond that. The recommended maximum wear time is 4 weeks. Beyond that the gel starts to lift and is more likely to break.

What should I avoid in the first 12 hours?

Same as Shellac. Avoid prolonged hot water and heat in the first 12 hours. The product needs time to fully bond to the nail plate after curing. Cold or lukewarm water is fine.

What makes Builder Gel lift or chip faster?

Thin or flexible nails underneath. When the natural nail flexes, the gel on top doesn't flex at the same rate. That difference in movement is what causes lifting at the free edge, especially on nails that are thin or damaged. If this happens to you regularly, tell us. We can adjust the structure of the application to compensate.

Impact and pressure. Builder Gel is strong but not unbreakable. Using your nails as tools, opening cans, or any lateral pressure on the tip can cause a break. Always use the pad of your finger.

Water and chemicals without gloves. Same rules as Shellac. Avoiding harsh chemicals and wearing gloves when cleaning are among the most effective things you can do to extend the life of your Builder Gel.

Infill vs full removal

This is one of the biggest advantages of Builder Gel over Shellac. You don't need to remove everything every time.

At Brava we offer two types of infill depending on how long it's been since your last appointment.

If you come back within 21 days, the regrowth is manageable and the structure is still solid. This is the ideal window. The infill fills in the gap near the cuticle, rebalances the structure, and refreshes the colour without touching the existing product. It's quicker, healthier for the nail, and more cost-effective for you.

If it's been 22 days or more, there's more regrowth to work with and the appointment takes a little longer. The price reflects that extra work. The result is the same, strong, fresh nails, but the process is more involved.

One important note: infill at Brava is only available for existing Brava clients. If your previous set was done at another salon, you'll need to book a full new service. We only work on top of what we've done ourselves.

A full removal is recommended every 3 to 4 infill cycles to check the health of the natural nail underneath.

When should I come back?

Ideally before day 21. That's when the appointment is faster, cheaper, and better for your nails. Don't wait until there's significant regrowth. The longer you leave it, the more the structure is compromised and the more work the infill requires.

If something lifts or breaks within 5 days of your appointment, come back in. That's covered under our guarantee.

Gel X Extensions

Gel X extensions add length to your natural nail using a soft gel tip that's bonded directly onto the nail plate and cured under a UV or LED lamp. The result is a full extension that looks and feels natural, with the strength of gel and the flexibility to avoid breakage.

Unlike acrylic extensions, Gel X tips are lighter, thinner, and much gentler on the natural nail underneath. They're also fully soak-off, which means removal is clean and doesn't damage the nail plate when done properly.

How long do Gel X extensions last?

With proper care, Gel X extensions last between 3 and 4 weeks before needing an infill or a new set. The limiting factor is usually regrowth at the cuticle, not breakage. If you look after them well, they won't chip or break before that point.

What should I avoid in the first 24 hours?

The first 24 hours are the most important for extensions. The bond between the tip and the natural nail is at its most vulnerable right after the appointment. Avoid hot water, prolonged soaking, and any kind of impact or lateral pressure on the tips. No opening cans, no heavy bags, no gym if it involves gripping.

After 24 hours the bond is fully set and you can go back to normal. With gloves for cleaning, obviously.

What makes Gel X extensions break or lift faster?

Impact on the sides or tips. Extensions add length, and length means more leverage. A knock that your natural nail would survive can snap an extension. Be especially careful with doors, bags, and anything that involves gripping with force.

Hot water and chemicals without gloves. Same rules as every other service. Water expands the nail, chemicals break down the bond. Gloves every time.

Leaving them on too long. Beyond 4 weeks the gap at the cuticle becomes significant and the structure of the extension is compromised. This increases the risk of breakage and makes the infill appointment much harder.

What if one breaks?

Don't try to fix it at home. A broken extension that's been repaired incorrectly can lift the natural nail underneath and cause real damage. Come in and we'll rebuild it properly.

If it breaks within 5 days of your appointment, it's covered under our guarantee.

Infill vs full new set

Same logic as Builder Gel. You don't need a full new set every time.

If you come back within the right window, we fill in the regrowth, rebalance the structure, and refresh the look without removing the existing extensions. It's faster, cheaper, and better for your natural nails.

If you leave it too long or a nail breaks, a full new set may be needed. We'll always tell you which option makes more sense when you come in.

When should I come back?

Around 3 weeks is the sweet spot. The regrowth is visible but the structure is still solid. Don't wait until the gap is significant or a nail has already broken. If something lifts or breaks within 5 days of your appointment, come back in. That's covered under our guarantee.

Take care of your nails. We'll take care of the rest.
